Carbon fiber props broke in my hand

I was doing a little pre flight and tightening my props. Just making sure they were snug. I felt 2 of them crack. No visible cracks but I felt it give. I went back to the stock props for now. So what is the trick to tightening? I always feel like I'm putting to much force. Is there a better way to hold the prop?

I put a drop of Lock-Tite thread sealer on the shaft before snugging the nuts down so that I didn't have to worry about them coming loose during operation. I'm sure that was your concern when you were tightening your's. If you choose to do this, be sure to use the blue Lock-Tite and not the red Lock-Tite (which is supposed to be "permanent").
