Better to recharge battery right after or before next flight

Which is better or does it make any difference?

If you aren't going to fly for a while charge to about 50% and stop. Lithium batteries don't like to sit around fully charged. Between 50-80% charged is OK.

Its better to charge up before you fly.

Sounds good.

So it's not a big deal to leave it uncharged (like 10%) for a couple days before I fly? I know when I charge my wifi extender battery after a flight I usually need to give it a boost before flight again, but it's probably a different style battery than the lipo.

10% on a regular basis on a Lithium battery should be avoided. It will reduce the number of discharge cycles the battery will give before loosing capacity.

I don't fly mine under about 30%. After I fly I will give them 20min on the charger if I'm not going to fly for a while. Avoid leaving the battery below 30% or above 80% for more than a few days.

This all sounds good but based on what? Who says this stuff? The whole advantage of lithium ion is the lack of "memory". What experience backs up these numbers?

Memory effect is only one attribute to a battery's personality. Lithium batteries are subject to damage due to high internal voltages if left at a too high a charge voltage for long periods.

I'm **** about taking care of my Li batteries. If you think the Phantom battery is expensive you should see what some of the camera batteries I use cost. I have found from personal experience that leaving a Li battery fully charged when not in use absolutely reduces its life. That isn't cool on a battery that costs about $700.

The Phantom batteries aren't straight lithium-ion, for one thing. Also, this isn't a "battery memory" issue - herre's more lipo specific information: http://www.tjinguytech.com/charging-how ... erminology

Ok. That helps. What about these safety bags they sell? Are any of you charging, storing and transporting in a fire proof bag?

Re: Better to recharge battery right after or before next fl

Personally, I'm not but I never charge the batteries and leave them - I'm either in the same room or the one next door and have a check every now and again to make sure they are not swelling or getting hot, etc. If I was going to put the batteries on a storage charge and not use them for a couple of months then I would probably put them in a metal box or similar and put them in an outbuilding, just in case. Day to day use, though, they are kept in the flight case. I do check them before and after every flight for any signs of swelling or other damage, though, so I'm not blind to the possibility of an issue. Charging time is when you need to be particularly vigilant - I know ours have a smart circuit with built-in temperature sensor but I'd rather not leave them charging overnight and trust the circuit to catch any issues before they become the orange, flamey kind!

I found this awhile back.

I have seen a fair amount of stuff on lipo storage and everything uses words like "a while" or "a long time"
Thank god this one chart above has actual times listed!

So can I assume that a 100% charge sitting for just a month at room temp is just fine?

To state it differently you are loosing about 2.5% capacity per month at room temp when being stored at 100% charge.

It would be best to store a fully charged battery in a zip lock Baggie in the refrigerator. I have done this before for several days, but usually I store them at about 50% charge at room temp.
