Hello,
I am having trouble with my FPV setup. From what I have read on-line from other people, the Phantom will lose signal and go into failsafe before the video cuts out. My experience is no where near that.
Here is my setup:
- Phantom 2
- ZenMuse H3-D3
- iOSD mini
- GoPro 3 Black
- Bluebeam Ultra 5.8ghz antennas
- Immersion 600w 5.8ghz transmitter w/ the 3-clover antenna installed
- Black Pearl receiver w/ a stick and the 5-clover antenna installed
With the exception of the Immersion, all the components are installed internally. All the connections are soldered & heat shrinked. I have been careful to never power on the Immersion without an antenna attached.
I have been testing around my home. I live out in the country, so there is some EM interference as everyone has Wi-fi, but that is about it. No cell service (I have to drive 8 miles to get a signal) and no big power lines nearby. I am confident everything is configured correctly and there are no issues with the component install. When flying nearby (20-50ft), the video is clear and crisp. However simply flying straight up, at 100m the video starts to cut out and gets grainy. The video only occasionally flickers to life above 250m.
Based on what I have read on-line it sounds like having the right antenna is key. I thought I had purchased quality antennas, but now I am beginning to doubt my choice. I bought them from Maniacs Hobby Complex, and despite nearly $30 in shipping, they were simply placed in a yellow shipping envelope with no extra padding and sent to me via UPS. Needless to say, the blister-pack packaging was crushed. I am uncertain how sensitive the antennas are to being deformed & straightened.
My questions:
- The antennas have a flexible cable on them. How should the antenna be placed? Sticking straight out from the aircraft? Angled down? At what angle?
- Same question for the receiving antenna.
- Am I correct in having the 3-clover antenna on TX and the 5-clover on the RX?
- I have the Immersion set to the default channel. Other than avoiding interference with other operators, is there a performance benefit to trying a different channel?
- Should I pitch the Bluebeam antennas and get something else? Recommendations?
I am not afraid to spend money on the right kind of antennas. I know this is not the area to go cheap!
Thanks,
-Eric
