Where would one "get rid of" a battery? Just in regular garbage?

Depends on how eco-friendly you want to be. Regular garbage if you just don't care, battery recycling facility if you do. Many retail outlets have battery recycling bins... Home Depot, Lowes, and (i think?) Best Buy to name a few.

I keep a gallon zip-top bag and throw my AA AAA 18650 and small size batteries in it... take it to a recycling bin when it's about half full. Put a piece of Scotch or electrical tape over the negative end if concerned about one shorting out.

Unfortunately too many Old Battery bins are INSIDE shops and personally I would never dispose of a LiPo in such. Also even the ones outside tend to be in a car park too close to the building.

Disposal IMHO is direct to disposal yard - not a bin with all the other domestic batterys ...
