transmitters and receivers

I am new to drones and have not much knowledge yet but I am learning. The question I want to ask is a friend gave me a receiver from a pontesic drone which was lost, could I use this to control a drone I am thinking of making from bought parts. Would I need a specific transmitter , thanks in advance. I hope I am not asking a dumb question?

I don't know what kind of receiver ("pontesic") you have so I can't comment. But there are a lot of resources on YouTube. Just beware of the amount of time you'll spend going down that rabbit hole. You may be better served by starting with one of the small ones (aka "mini-whoops"). Many come with their own radio/controller. They're cheap, and somewhat indestructible. That way you won't be out much money if you decide drones aren't for you.
