Article loses some cred here:
"The Consumer Electronics Association estimates that the worldwide drone market will reach $1 billion in three years, about a tenfold increase from the $105 million in projected revenue this year"
105 million in revenue this year? Actually, just DJI is slated to do one billion. And, it will not increase by tenfold in 3 years - more likely 3-4X as the consumer market gets saturated.
No doubt a smaller and lighter platform is nice - but think about it. The weight in in:
batteries
brushless motors (7 or more for quad and gimbal).
So having a lighter of combo chip is only a small part of making them smaller. Open up the Phantom 3 and take the single board out which contains most of the computer...it's not very heavy!
Yes - it will be nice to have a smaller system-in-a-chip to work with, but the real innovation is in the secret sauce of the tuning and software which will be loaded onto it and also in the apps that then interface and control it.
