Use the video button on the left side and the photo button on the right side. if shooting video hit the video button to stop. Hit the photo button to change to photo button to take the photo. Hit the video button to go back to video and it will start the video again.
Play with that a bit.

Actually, I don't believe this was always possible, but if the video is recording and you hit the photo button on the controller it will take a photo and continue recording video. Play with that also.
Sooooo, I guess the answer is yes.

cdusher is correct. I just use the two camera buttons on either side without having to worry about what mode its in.
