Realtor Using Owners Drone Pictures

For logging, sure if a helo is up there anyways, then why not. Of course you wouldn't need to spend extra on a drone. That is definitely not what I'm talking about. Of course a small plot of land with buildings going to be torn down on it, wouldn't need special drone shots either.

Satellite photos can be months if not years out of date, so you are SOL using them for new development or newly renovated homes...

A lot of people aren't trying, they are doing. That's why I support the expensive and cumbersome restrictions the FAA has placed on commercial use of drones. It keeps the "hoards" away.

I enjoy building things as well and of course there are better designs, that's why I don't have just a Phantom.

You don't have a use for them commercially anyways, because you aren't in that line of work, so I wouldn't expect you to understand.

Sure, if you just want a picture of your roof, go right ahead and screenshot a google maps photo. If you want to sell your high-end real estate at a premium, quickly, hire a professional.

Let me clarify. I manage my holdings from my TV entertainment room.

The pictures of almost everything already exist. The helicopters are up there anyway. The costs are born by government in fire prevention.

The ten acre project I mention is being consolidated from 350 owners to only four. It is in the sky scraper district of a major city.

The timber is managed by contractors. If I need a picture I call them and have it brought over. We have stereo satellite photos of almost every square inch of the United States at any engineering university library. This has been the case for decades.

A lot of people are trying to monetize toy planes. The FAA has created a category for those. It will sell you a permit to take pictures too. But I don't see how that is going to work out to gainful employment to hoards of guys with drones.

I enjoy building drones and a lot of other things. I have built about 15 of them. There are better designs for these tasks.

Oh yes, Last night I was visiting with a young lady on facebook. She suddenly produced a perfectly adequate aerial picture of her house in abut 10 seconds via cell phone. If I need one of my house I'll send her a note and save the costs of paying you.

Yes we have six high end houses in Richardson TX for our people with the same sort of photography. As for Austin my son did his PhD in physics there.

We purchased them outright with cash. You don't do that from a picture. Frankly I won't even look at a picture until I see the written specifications. We have people who do that sort of investigation.

My property in Oregon is about as far off the beaten path as you can get in the lower 48. I can see my truck move around on the parking on Google. But that is not the correct source for government satellite shots. You just don't know where to look.

I think the entire thing is a fools errand for toy quads. So what if three high-end houses sold last quarter which qualify for your use. Your shots include properties not owned by your client. We have people with security concerns which would be concerned abut that. In fact what can I pay you to sell me the pictures and not give them to the realator? It is highly specialized and about as likely to get you rich as starting a rock band in your garage.

You don't do a lot of things from a picture and frankly, a lot of people won't physically go to look at a property, unless it really looks promising AND meets the written specifications that they are looking for... I can almost promise you, that "your people" aren't physically going to every listing to look at the property, if you are really that lazy when looking for a new house. They are looking at the pictures and video at the very least, to narrow down to field...

It doesn't matter where you get a satellite image from, it's still just that, a picture of your roof.

It makes no difference if other people's houses are in my photo's/video's or not. There are provisions that help protect me from grumpy neighbors, but I will always do whatever I can to accommodate anyone who is potentially uncomfortable with my filming. It's really not that specialized and while it's not going to make you a millionaire, it does pay the bills rather well, but that's why smart people diversify their portfolio..

Obviously you are not the target market for this specific kind of videography. But heck, if you would rather pay someone to take you up in an airplane or helicopter to view the property yourself, I can do that to.

Frankly, it really just looks like you like to gloat.

Every contractor, every agent, and every client I have ever worked for has absolutely raved about my customer service. I'm simply not looking for your business.

This is nice. I am not in the sales side of anything. But I know people who are. I have other duties. It is good to see interest from a pilot. After Vietnam I used to run around with one of my buddies flying missions for industrial parts up and down the coast of Oregon. I recall one time when we actually were going backwards up the beach becasue the headwinds were so strong. Neither of us is fit for that now. He, however, has a commercial ticket and we have discussed photographic drones a lot. He did two tours as a Navy photographer. Mostly, as it turns out, over northern Asia not Vietnam.

A god attitude goes a long way to getting things to go one's way. A bad one kills them instantly. Should I need help you would be the first I'd contact.

We are not interested in retail real estate at this age. We are interested in charitable hospitals. This is an odd market. I know a hospital realator. He makes a deal about once every five years. But obviously large medical institutions have all sorts of housing needs and while public realty firms may have reason for contact with us, we generally have people on the board who can handle that as lawyers and choose to avoid the public firms for the obvious issues with greed and arrogance exhibited here by some of the others responding.

It is also important that you seem willing to listen to the security concerns which may arise among our people. No one is going to be pleased with a photographer who freely speaks his opinions to others or publishes our information as some sort of come-on to others for advertising.

I don't understand why anybody thinks any of this is going to be financially rewarding anyway. My family and I have owned 75 houses. We never needed pictures from the air to sell them. Nor is it likely that anybody in any other field is obeying the rules either. Trucks cut corners, bike skip stop signs, realtors cheat on listings, presidential candidates break security.

What the FAA wants to satisfy their masters and have some sort of register of who claims to be doing what and where they are.

I agree with you 100% & think this whole drone registration & exemption thing is over reaching & people are going to do it regardless. However people flying over major cities for marketing purposes NY, Chicago, Miami, San Francisco, etc....is a problem & if you don't know what you are doing could cause a lot of damage. When I fly I usually go up around 120', that's plenty. With the wide angle lens it looks a lot higher & you still get the views, no need to go any higher. My wife & I are in real estate & if I was a client I want to see photos of the exterior / Interior & couldn't care less about views from the air. But that's what agents want, its all about branding & marketing your area. I live in the Florida Keys & its all about life style, that's what marketing guru's teach. Every time you go up its water everywhere. Homes here are very expensive & a view from above showing the home on the water & proximity to Ocean / Gulf access is wanted by agents. Most of the time I fly over water or straight up from street & never over other peoples property. My concerns are its only going to get worse. I think this is heading towards the FAA requiring you to becoming a pilot if you take aerial photos with your quad along with yearly testing & certification, why else would they only grant an exemption for 2 yrs. Frankly I will just go so far before I say screw it, its more then I want to deal with. All of us got caught up in the large net the FAA cast to curb this potential rising problem.

It seems to me the FAA may know from experience at working with people something the rest of us don't know. They may see the honor system failing and realize that it it is not going to be possible to just let people do as they wish and expect safety to prevail.

I'm not talking about making a couple of hundred dollars to sell the pictures. I feel this could give me even the slightest edge in landing a listing account. My average listing is is just over 900k and my portion of the commission is over 15k. If I could land 2 additional listing a year by the home owners thinking I went one extra step then the other agents this is a good return. Does not matter if the potential buyers like or care if there are aerial photos. I'm just seeing this at another tool to get a client. Also don't like the reference that realtors are not truthful. I work with a group of true professionals that are extremely knowledgeable and valuable to our clients.

Man.... I specifically avoided chiming in because the thread got totally derailed from what it started as and from what its intent was/is supposed to be. Sorry to see that kind of forum conduct but, it is going to go like that from time to time.

That said, my neighbor just listed their house (sold in 2 weeks) at an upper range price for this neighborhood. One of the realtor's selling points (to the seller to get the listing) was that aerial shots that show the bay and the gulf (we are on a skinny strip of land in FL) would be used in advertisements to accentuate the "on the water" in the back and 2 minute walk to the beach characteristics. The realtor's husband is the drone pilot and I am pretty sure he is a hobbyist without a pilot's license. Frankly, I support free commerce and trade and do not support any industry using licensing as a way to restrain trade. In the case of UAV's my OPINION is that a guy with a pilot's license will not necessarily be any safer flying 35' - 100' in the air than a guy without the license. I fully support the notion that any one who practices and is decent at flying and at photography should be able to participate in commerce.

Now... If I were the guy in town with the little Cessna and the 2-seater helicopter that does ALL the aerial photos around here, I might say otherwise. I would cite safety concerns and all that crap in order to protect my little income stream.

So, I hope I did not go too far off topic but those are my thoughts.

Well, I think there is no way for the FAA to create evidence of any of that anyway. Unless you report it to them. The pictures do not have encrypted time marks and insurance they were not edited. Nor does their authority include SWAT team raids on your home for photographs.

Safer as a pilot? Who knows. More knowledgeable? Definitely.

Airspace, TFRs, etc. are all large concerns that most hobbyists have no clue about. Just look at the dope that flew near the President's motorcade while within a TFR...

Most people I see uploading photos to public areas are dumb enough to leave the EXIF data attached.
