Where I live, thermals can be very unpredictable, especially in the late afternoon

I see, and I am not familiar with strong thermals. But isn't it so that turbulent upwards airflow amplifies Vortex Ring State issue and affects like descending too rapidly? In your flying conditions prop guards apparently will cause more problems than in non-thermal environment.
