What is a good software package to merge the 34 photos into a sphere? Photoshop merge does fine with the horizontal pano mode but the sphere didn’t work well.

Either PTGui, Photo stitching software 360 degree Panorama image software - PTGui Stitching Software the full version of which you have to pay for (otherwise it's watermarked) or ICE (Image Composite Editor) Image Composite Editor - Microsoft Research , which is free.
