It has the ability to orient itself spatially without resorting to standard accelerometers. It uses only the visual cues provided by the optic flow compound sensor eye, and without resorting to measuring its velocity or altitude. Additionally, it can avoid steep obstacles even in an unstable environment without any reference to the absolute vertical.

Seems like things are starting to take off. Interesting stuff.

Optical flow is used already by Parrot AR drones as well as being an add-on for 3DR flight controllers and probably several others.
I think the Inspire 1 uses it as well. It is used in addition to all the other sensors to help stabilize the craft.
