Basic pilot ****. Don't take off without enough fuel for the mission plus reserve. In real AC you have to take weight into account. With RC aircraft full fuel and no fuel weigh the same, so why not take off with full fuel for every mission.
It will eventually come back and bite you in the *** if you continue to start flights with less than full batt.

I get that now but at the time I was a new user and only had one battery and nowhere to charge it. Since then I've bought an additional battery and car charger. I agree it's not worth the risk but I didn't realize the risk at the time thinking that a full battery lasts me about 23 minutes so in theory a 50 percent battery should last me 11 to 12 minutes which was enough for a 9 minute flight. The point in all this is not my stupidity but the fact that the machine did its job and returned home. No harm no foul and I've lived and learned.
