If the Phantom 3 can detect the ground, how about detecting what's on all sides and above?

Then you could have Newbie Mode where it would refuse to get any closer than x feet to an inanimate object (tree, wall). This would avoid many of the beginner catastrophes.

Hand catching might be a problem, though. ;)

That would only work if you fly very slowly.
Look up Panoptes to see what one company is doing along those lines.
If you feel you'd need such a system, you're flying in the wrong area.
The critical first rule for beginner pilots is to fly in a clear, open area well away from trees, buildings and other obstructions.

Well, the device has many features to help newcomers (I'm not) such as the simple ability to stay put in the air when you release the controls.

Not sure why people here would object to an option that prevents it from ramming into obstacles. New cars are coming with such sensors, so drones won't be far behind.

(Interesting how macho types who don't need help diss features for people who might benefit.)

There are big limitations to the speed at which these can work.
On top of that, they weigh something and all extra weight = less flying time
Check out what the developer says on their website http://www.panoptesuav.com/ebumper/
Distance to obstacle at activation = up to 10 feet
Maximum protected closure velocity = 5 kts (8ft/sec)
This is not going to provide a solution at regular flight speeds.
