Monitoring airport frequency?

I'm doing my first flight near or local airport. Small planes typically, so I'm not too concerned. Any tips on what to get to monitor the airport frequency? Is there an app?

Handheld radio, the frequency can be obtained from the airports in question.
Do not broadcast, that requires a license, but a scanner can be had easily and cheap, just Google.

I have a Sportcat made by bearcat. Have it programmed for the local Unicom frequencies as well as weather. Works fine, easily picking up local air traffic in and around the pattern.
