My iPad doesn't have a sim card for 3G. Do you need to have to have internet at all times using GS or just the map area pre loaded?

My iPad doesn't have a sim card -- just be sure to cache the maps in advance by viewing them.

Another option, one which I use, if you smartphone has the option is to enable it as a WiFi hotspot.
