After uploading the new firmware I decided to spend some quality time just poking through all of the options in the app and testing some of the photo settings to see if I could get better photographs.
One of the settings I tested was 16:9 or 4:3, just taking pictures in the living room. The 4:3 photos are 4000x3000 and look good, but with some distortion in the corners from the edge of the lens.
The 16:9 photos are 4000x2250 and it looks like it just shaves the top and bottom off the image,which does avoid the edge distortion from the lens. On my laptop I was seeing a lot more distortion in the 16:9 picture, but I'm going to blame that on the crappy Windows Photo viewer until I do more testing.
I mistakenly deleted the photos from the card after first glancing at them, so I'll go take some more to compare, but based on just sensor specs (12MP, 4000x3000) it looks like you want to take all of your photos in 4:3 and then crop, trim, or correct in post.
