Home Piont Question

Lot of talk lately about home points...... seems they're pretty important.

The last few days I've found myself flying next to tall buildings or trees and taking off without gps. I haven't had any problems, but got to thinking. Does the home piont get set when I get a gps signal? If it does, where does it set it at?

You have to be in either p or sport mode. Gps is not functional in Atti mode. When you turn on RC and AC during warm the AC will acquire satellites for gps flight. Signal strength for satellites is indicated at the top of the display in the go app beside the Opti icon by the number of sats acquired. The app will tell you " the home point has been updated please check it on the map" when sufficient satellites have been acquired for gps flight Hope this answers your query

I'd be interested in knowing how the home point is recorded once you have lifted off.

The Phantom can't set home point until it has GPS.
In the situation you describe it will record its position when it gets enough sats to fix a position.
If that location is not a good one for a possible RTH scenario, you can move the Phantom to somewhere suitable and reset home to the Phantom's location.
And don't worry about the altitude at which you reset home, the Phantom only records lat/long and ignores altitude.

I don't think that the last statement is accurate. If your drone is 10' off the ground when the home point is set and the RTH is engaged, once it gets back to that point and to the altitude where the home point was set, the motors will cut and it will drop like a rock.

Probably should double check your statement. Landing , the bird continues to descent until it touches down. Once the flight controller senses that it is no longer going down, then the motors are shut down.

You haven't flown much, have you?

DJIs design engineers are a lot smarter than that.
Your home point includes no altitude information.

You can also set your home point to the controller location after the drone is in the air.
