It may be a dumb question, why is there a lack of trees there? Of course I'm from west Virginia and we have to fight back the forest to keep it from over taking our homes. We cut a locust tree and 300 sprout up around the trunk. LOL

the loch is higher up a fair bit from crieff it could be the altitude
Rootman there is about 20 trees at the far end of the loch
but thats it. we don't have any problems like what your having man
it sounds like nature is putting up a stiff fight there.
our forestry commission rips out loads of trees as well
