Compass calibration

Went to a local offroad riding area and situated myself on a mountain that was kinda rocky.Went to calibrate compass and got the error saying something about magnetic or metallic or something.Took me 45 minutes and had to go way down to the river bottom before I could calibrate the compass.This is 20 miles away from civilization out in the desert.I wanna know why I could not calibrate on the mountain and had to go down below to the river bottom.Here is my lame video which shows where I ended up flying my P3S:

I really wanted to be up above and swoop down but nada.

Ore in the ground maybe?
 
Iron, copper or something in its natural form. The stuff mines dig up
