Compass calibration in new app

What does the compass calibration feature do on the new app? I'm using android version. Just curious how it works on the app. Everything else seems to work fine just need some help on this.

I think it's justed used so you don't have to flip the S1 switch all those times. I've used it twice so far and it works.
