CHECK THIS OUT BOYS

Auto rotation, now that brings back memories. During my training as a Petty Officer in the RAN, we spent a complete day fighting fires, BIG fires. Throughout the day all we could hear, apart from Instructors, were large SeaKing Chopper pilots practising take off and landing. Just as we were about to fight a Mock Galley fire with burning oil all over the place we heard something which made us all stop and quickly scan the sky for a chopper in trouble. We spotted him immediately, the guy with copious amounts smoke belching out from what appeared to be the motor housing. He was dropping like a stone, literally, we froze, fearing the worse. Just seconds from hitting the deck it was if he was on the end of rubber band, a bounce and he landed as gently as if he'd been under power. From memory (it was 50 years ago) he pulled on the collective, just before the deck came up to meet him.

It's funny how the human brain works, a situation where the lack of sound caught everyone's attention. Oh, except for one of the instructors, he was busy setting the oil alight, plus getting drowned from the high pressure water hose which we allowed to go astray due to being distracted. It was hilarious watching the instructor getting knocked off his feet and being pushed across the concrete. He got his revinge I'm sad to say. He pushed us too close to the Galley fire, the extreme heat we felt turned the water in our anti flash gear to steam and we ended up with blisters up our arms.
