I have one incident myself and witnessed another with my pals model. LiPo's can 'go OFF' with no reason apparent. They do not have to be overcharged or 'hit with a hammer' ...
But yes - most videos online show staged triggering of the LiPo by grossly overcharging or abusing solely with purpose to get it to react.
For DJI batterys - if you don't want to wait for auto-discharge ... the TELSIN discharger may be slow but its an excellent bit of kit ... the discharged energy can be fed to charge up any USB device such as Mobile Phone .. Camera ... even the RC controller of your Phantom !! It auto shuts of at 15.4V as well....
For standard LiPo's - then the MyRCMart 3in1 discharger is brilliant ... caters from single up to 6 cell ... user settings for storage etc.
