Amps... How do they work?

Asking questions, I don't care to do.
What I know...
1W = 1000mW = 30dBm... Got that.
But a 3W amp don't add 90dB to the final output. I know it boost signal.. but how?
I'm asking for meter testing purposes. (Immersion RC) I have researched this here and other places already... Still not understanding.
Can anyone make a simple explanation to help me understand?
Thanks in advance..
Johnny

The dB decibel scale is NOT linear, its logarithmic.

a 3db gain increase is double the power.

3W is 34.7 dbm

10 dB is a factor of 10 ... 20 dB is a factor of 100 ... 30 dB is a factor of 1000 ... and 40 dB is a factor of 10000. See the trend now?

By the way, watts and amps have nothing to do with dBm. Amps is a measure of current, IE: if water were electricity it is how much water is flowing through the hose (wire). Watts is like Amps multiplied times the voltage, or in the water analogy the pressure. dBm is a ratio of some quantity measured against some starting point. it is not clear what you are trying to understand, but I hope that helps a bit.

Yes, dBm or dBmw... the reference is one milli-watt @ 50 ohms impedance.

ALL of this is easily explained on-line.

Funny guys...Yes it's easy if you already know.. I have to start somewhere, same as everyone else.
I said amp as in amplifier/booster. I did look online.. the way it's explained I just couldn't grasp.

It can be confusing to the beginner.

That is why I mentioned on-line as there are many sources of info already published and some may be better than others to help you grasp it. Not being rude.

Oh, don't take it the wrong way Johnny, we are just trying to help you, and maybe poke a little fun in the process. You should have seen what was said to the fella who sent us a picture of a cat in his Phantom 4 box yesterday.

You will discover that the brain trust here will tackle almost any challenge if they have enough information to define the question.

Where is that :-) ?

Understood and no offense taken. Trying to learn this info is mod related. If I have an amp/booster going bad, I want to learn to troubleshoot it myself.
This forum is online BTW and I use it daily to learn, (and I mean every day since I've been a member) so it's 'another' source to me, not just a forum.
That being said, and since this thread is now open, if someone has other sources that would benefit people who wants to learn and is trying their best to learn, (like myself) do share please. I guarantee I'm not the only phantom owner that would love to know what to do/how to test, if needed. I have 2 sets of amps, (rf linx, and sunhans) 2 panel antenna's, (both maxxuav's) and a set of L-coms. I'm here, (and other places) to learn. It's clicking, but slowly.
Asq + Bsq = Csq X 2.614 is a formula for figuring a 22.5° rolling offset in pipe work. I know that, but this crap is hard..lol

By the way... how do you actually grow a summer squash?.............

As far as I'm concerned he answered correctly.
