Doing some experimenting and just noticed that when switching to 4:3 on the iphone the viewable area on the screen gets smaller... But this does not happen on the ipad mini.... Any ideas?

Yes, the iPhone is still wide and the iPad is still (relatively) square.
When you look at a non-wide image on a wide screen iPhone you are going to lose space. If you look at a wide screen image on the iPad you will also lose space because the iPad is square. I hope this helps!
