USB connector in the TX

What's the purpose of the mini usb connector in the TX?
I can think that it is for firmware update, but, it is not updated through the assistant software?

The controller must be connected to the computer to update the firmware. That's what the port is for. And, once connected, you must use the RC utility to update, not the Assistant software.
