I've been reading the posting posts where people are adding lights to their drones by going into the unit and adding wiring for a "headlight"

I bought one of these rechargeable ones off eBay and attached it to my unit with Velcro, it's a very bright light, definitely makes it easier to see during civil twilight

How many lumens are they? I've been look for a cheaper alternative to Lume Cubes but haven't found anything close to the 1500 lumens they offer at a reasonable price.

Im staying away from Lum Cubes because they apparently get uber hot after being on for a few seconds. I don't want such a massive heat source too close to the antenna/ etc and mounted on the plastic landing gear.

I've heard the same. I was looking for my Inspire 1 and they mount out on the CF arms. IMHO Lume Cubes are way overpriced anyway.

I've got the Lume Cubes and they do get very hot, but under the prop wash they never have gotten to the point they thermally shut off until cool again when run at full brightness. They are good for seeing the drone at night, but still too dim for anything photo wise unless you are within 15 feet and with a high ISO. They do cut the flying time down a few minutes (<18 minutes) due to the added weight of them and the brackets (~300 grams). Full brightness should last the duration of the flight time. They are also quite purplish in color. The BlueTooth dimming via the phone or pad is sort of neat, but BT distance is limited.
