PHOTOGRAMMETRY SURVEY what's gonna be the best chance?
Hi everybody,
after The Phantom 4pro (20MP camera) stopped production what do you think about substituting it with a Mavic 2Pro with Hasselblad L1D-20c-20MP camera 1" sensor?
Specialists told that either if Phantom 4 RTK is still in production and sold to professionals and Institutions, the data resulting by the use of the RTK antenna are not accurate at all.
Yet I do think that I don't feel relaxed about the idea of continuing buying Phantom(any kind) when it is sure 100% that's definitely out of production.
Any suggestion and point of view is accepted.
My best regards

One worry to consider with the current Mavic is the electronic shutter versus the mechanical shutter. There will be distortion if the craft is moving - the advantage of a mechanical shutter.

Hi davidransier,
could you please be more precise?
Is there any report/comparison you could show me about these negative results?

:oops:Usually I fly after having planned my flight height and my GSD and added a specific overlap, so by an Android app I save my project and then I do connect my drone to start flying. With Phantom 4 Pro it worked perfectly with M210 a little less because the drone is heavy and not softly stopping on hovering for shooting. What will Mavic 2Pro do?

...let's say that the lines deformation is a matter of lens distortion and not of the camera drone shooting system.

I have seen sample pictures where telephone poles look more like a curved banana rather than a straight pole.
I don't know where you live but where I live many of our telephone poles are actually curved bananas. ? just sayin'....

My firm tried using the Mavic and it kept delivering wonky models, curved walls, light poles that looked like a sickle. Our phantom is great! The only issue it gives us is the standard windows look a little funky.

Photogrammetry is my bread and butter. Mechanical shutter is a must.

Hi Harleydude,
please,
I need to have more specifications by you about this argument,
cause I need to choose an alternative to Phantom 4Pro that could fit accurately for stereo-photogrammetry.
Phantom RTK somebody confirmed me that is not as accurate as they say it to be by the use of the RTK antenna, and what I ask you is: if I am using a specific App to project the flight, (so at the end what the drone does is just to follow the instructions given by the app), I do not see the real opportunity the mechanical shutter gives if it's not me giving the command of shooting.
Could you please give me a direct comparison between 2 pictures taken by a mechanical and an electronical shutter?
Thanks...

Rolling shutter has problems showing moving subjects (or static subjects from a moving camera) because the whole scene does not get recorded at the same instant.
It's easier seen from examples than explained.
Google Rolling Shutter to see lots of examples and explanations.
Here's just one way it can show:

First off, anybody doing photogrammetry for a living should have a firm grasp on all things photography. One very basic facet of photography is the shutter and how it works. The difference between a mechanical shutter vs. an electronic or "rolling" shutter is PROFOUND in the photogrammetry game.

In the simplest terms, the mechanical shutter takes a snapshot of the entire frame all at once. So if you have a camera on a tripod in a static position with a shutter speed of 1/1000 and you take a photo of a 20'-long truck driving by @ 50 mph, what you get is a photo of a 20' long truck with very little (if any) motion blur. The truck will look like a truck.

Now, take the same photo with an electronic or "rolling" shutter. Imagine you have a paint roller, and you have to quickly roll it over the image as that bus is driving by. Instead of an instant capture of the truck, you will instead get a distorted photo of a truck because you were rolling over that instant in time, as opposed to capturing that instant in time instantly.

Now imagine you're flying your drone @ 25 mph snapping photos. Instead of getting undistorted images of roads, buildings, trees, parking lots, etc., you will get DISTORTED images, slightly warped, slightly bent...and/or slightly disconnected from one another.

Here is a great example of an electronic shutter vs. a mechanical one:

As you can see, the bottom image barely even looks like a propeller. It's very distorted. Conversely, the top image is CLEARLY a propeller. Now imagine trying to stitch together 500 photos, all with distortion in them. Can you say, "Nightmare?"

I have no idea what you just said. RTK and apps, have nothing to do with mechanical vs. electronic shutter. If you somehow believe that the difference between the two is that one is automatic and the other is manually controlled by a button, then, with all due respect, you are in the wrong business. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that I am misunderstanding you.

Could you please give me a direct comparison between 2 pictures taken by a mechanical and an electronical shutter?
Thanks...

Already done (see above).
