Are you editing your video on your pc before upload to youtube?

I don't know how to tell how youtube is handling the video. It never looks as good as the original. I've tried uploading .avi which takes several hours and with this I used .mp4. I read keeping the video in its original form is best. I can use any and all tips on this video stuff.
