I take it that these antennas are unidirectional, i.e you must point the RC at the bird all of the time whilst flying, is this true even when the aircraft is near to you

They are directional which is what gives them the longer range. However, they are also pretty forgiving when you are close - i.e. you don't have to aim it too carefully when it's close (less than 1000ft or so), just in the general direction. As the copter gets farther away, you have to be more and more precise with the aiming.
