It looks like Nokia is getting ready to jump into the commercial/public sector drone market. Back in February, they demoed drones that can be used for search and rescue. Instead of Wi-Fi, their drones use a custom LTE network and can be deployed anywhere.

With their Ultra Compact Network, you get a LTE cell that can be carried in a backpack. It has a range of up to 75 km and can support up to 400 devices. You could one Ultra Compact Network to supply the networking for a coordinate squadron of drones to quickly look for survivors from a disaster.

Nokie just filed for a trademark in the European Union, under the name "OVNI" under the categories of "Telecommunictions" and "Civilian and Military Drones".

While Nokia is new to the drone market, they are very good at designing and building devices. And they know a thing or two about cellular technology.
