lost signal

morning all, quick question, a cpl days ago, I was flying my pro mark, I had the app on my smartphone as I wanted to show my step daughter a live shot from the sky. I launched using the remote and things quickly went wrong as I could not bring the drone back, it just headed west, unfortunately over and into a small airport area. absolutely no control over the drone, I called LE, and spoke with the airport manager the next day and he was very understanding as I had notified them that I would be flying. LE on the other hand, waited for airport maintenance and confiscated the drone. I imagine a small town police department has their reasons. At any rate, I'll be getting the drone back early this afternoon. My question, since I had the app running, would that affect my ability to control the drone using the remote? While I am fairly new to flying, I had no problems on my other flights. Any input is appreciated.
