Is new update just for DJI Go, or is it firmware for drone too?

I fly a P4 for home/personal use, and an I2 for work - with DJI Go-4 for both of them (separate ipads)... Is this new update only for the app, or is it also a firmware update that will need to be applied to the drones?

There was a new version of the Go 4 app a week ago and now there is new firmware as well.
But you only have to apply them if you want to.

I thought one of them (maybe the app update?) was required or it would limit flight distance, height, video, etc.
