Can someone explain to me in plain terms what the iosd mini actually does?

The iOSD mini overlays telemetry data (batt level, height, speed, etc) on the video feed going to your FPV transmitter, so you'll see the info on the ground display (monitor or goggles, whatever you're watching it on).
