Other than legal aspects, what other benefits are there for registering with FAA? (Recreational flying)

None really. It is completely voluntary since it was struck down in court. In the USA, if you fly for hobby you do not need to register.

There's really nothing legal anymore. Registering is no longer required. Nevertheless, could it assist in any lost & found incidents?

Highly doubtful. I am unaware of any programs that allow the finder of a drone to contact the FAA for locating the owner. I am sure the FAA could care less. You would have better results contacting DJI I would think since the original owner is registered with DJI. Not sure even they would help. A name and contact info is the best way at this time. I label all mine with reward & contact info.

Mine is clearly labeled as well for just such an occasion. I fly with a 500 foot kite string attached, though. I can always just trace the string and find it.

Kite string? Really?

I would be scared of the string line getting tangled up in the props.

That’s a great idea!

I use a Brother label maker. Sticks forever and is weather resistant. I use a clear tape with black print... shows up nicely.

Yep there is no benefit to having the number on their. I'm sure the only benefit would be to Law Enforcement should you break a rule and crash somewhere.

So could your phone number in place of the registration number. Won't cost $5, won't make you hope that the FAA will contact you and I'm betting its far more likely that a person would call a phone number rather then attempt to report the found drone to the FAA.
