crap stills from phantom cameras

Well, like I said, I'm a newbie at this. I know the shot is far from perfect but whether that is due to equipment or inexperience I really couldn't say.. That was taken during a Litchi mission getting video. So it was just a quick "stop here and get a quick still shot while I'm here" thing. No settings or set up, just shot it in auto. Plus it isn't edited yet either, that may help.

Really, the subject matter was great Gary, good colours, I'm sure you will be able to get better examples too as you go forward mate. lt is all a learning curve for many of us. But a better camera would certainly help us all.
DJI are you listening ??

Looks like you dredged up a post that's 7 months old.
It doesn't prove much though.
Perhaps the guy had a bad camera/lens example.
And he gives no data to let you know how much of the original image you are looking at
Shot was taken into RAW, 3:4 ratio and then the center piece was cut out in PS.
Not much is known about the comparison image either.
Was it really shot with a cheap phone or something else?
How much of the image are we looking at?

What is known is that most P3s have a camera that isn't as good as a Nikon D800 or a Canon 5 MkIII
However it is possible to get quite good results with it and it goes a lot of places a big SLR will never go.
If everyone got pictures like the example above, DJI wouldn't be selling many Phantoms.
Here's an example of the kind of quality that's easily achievable:
DJI_0252a-X2.jpg

That is a really nice photo!

My one complaint with the Camera (on my P3A anyway) is that it's not amazing at reproducing colours (It's not bad though -- but things tend to look a little dull and washed out).

Here is a photo I took a few weeks back:

Here is that same photo with some editing to make the colours "pop" a little more (though they are by no means anymore accurate):

Is there sort of a rule of thumb when it comes to the Still Picture Camera settings that everyone is using?. Could someone maybe share what they feel works best for them in most situations. I think I have mine just set to AWB and sharpness, color etc on DLOG and 0 sharpness, etc.

Thanks!

P.S. Seems lately I've been doing more Still Shots than videos.

I don't think think the shot in the OP is consistent with results you can expect. I'm someone who is in the digital photography business and have come to expect a lot from digital raws. I own a Sony A7 and have gone through many nice cameras like Canon 5D's, Nikon D800, Canon 50D, and so on. I'm actually surprised at the quality of raws coming from the P3's FC300X. Sure, you don't get pixel level sharpness and very low noise like from an A7 given the small camera/sensor but I've printed raw shots up to 13x19 with great results. Here's sample taken in raw and converted to JPEG, ICC profile (for raw) applied as well as lens correction.

No one is saying all Phantom cameras are bad, just some as stated by many posters on this site. One day hopefully soon, one of the makers either DJI or Gopro will get sony's 20 mega pixel sensor into their cameras & we will all be happy. Sort of think that DJI know about the poor cameras but are happy to leave it that way for the consumer market. They are specialising mainly now with quality high end camera product like the new X5 with interchangeable lenses & larger platforms. just look at their marketing for the new Phantom 4, it is all about how anyone can fly it, shots of yourself running, surfing, even driving — ready to share everywhere. That & Osmo, is pure consumer gimmickery !
It is a good camera for what it is. More MP in the sensor would mean worse performance, smaller photo sites can only lead to a further reduced s/n ratio. Don't forget, 6.5 megapixel is closely equivalent to the performance of 100 ISO colour negative film (35mm)The average consumer automatically thinks more MP is better. Often it is worse. We would all benefit from improved optics though.

QUOTE="Crawdaddyjc, post: 784452, member: 50069"]the first pic in that comparison looks like he failed to remove the plastic lense cover that is on the camera when the phantom ships.

i have had some very nice pics with the p3a. the ones that didnt turn out or were blurry was from shooting while in motion. but i have found that if im not moving and take my time to frame the subject- my pics turn out quite nice.[/QUOTE]

Yea. Or the lens has a wasp sitting on the eye. :astonished:

What setting you guys using to get the best pics in sunny conditions?
