I had a very similar experience out of the box. Opened up, couldn't get anything talking to anything.
Found the issue was my device - it all worked fine with my wife's device.
Then on a suggestion from a forum, went back to my Huawei, turned on USB debugging mode, and everything's worked fine...
I always use RTH to bring it near me and then land manually. Being a few feet out sounds normal and for most my flights, that's enough to land somewhere bad.

If I access the "status" section of the DJI Go app, it advises that the "Battery firmware update required". It appears the RC and the rest of the aircraft are up to date. I've been through the firmware update...
