You weren’t over 400 ft. above your take off elevation, were you? Good! Lol

First time I flew out over a canyon, I didn’t realize how high I was above the river. I was flying negative165 ft. below me. It was still almost a 1,000 ft, to the river below.

To begin, I only flew it maybe 75 to 100 feet above the rim as I backed away, then headed for that big breech in the cap-rock.
I then descended into the canyon about like you did then slowly pulled up and out.
The river is at about 3,800 feet, and the rim right at 4,800.
