Per Meta4 above it apparently takes 3 seconds to shut the motors down and RTH initiated after I held it down for less than that. You understood correctly. It was very unlucky timing but ultimately if either I made sure that the P3P never flew under any obstructions AND/OR DJI SW didn't...

I didn't know about the flight mode switch cancel, it all happened very fast and I was kind of in shock for a moment why the heck it started bolting upward and by the time I got my finder on the phone it was too late. The switch cancel may have saved me but ultimately my portion of the blame...

That's definitely what happened, I'm just not sure why it initiated RTH when it was already on the ground. I guess the motors need to be stopped? The landing location was about 30m from the take-off point if I was to estimate w/o looking at the map/logs. Thanks for the suggestions guys, I...

Initial one was GL300B, the next was C and C presently. Someone on RC groups P3 owners thread said it's a known issue and DJI is working on it. Said to stay on 1.6.0 for the time being so I have renewed faith that they'll fix it, even though it seems like I'm the only one having this...

Finally got another TX back from DJI. This one does not have range issues so the problem was definitely with the last one that they sent me. For S&G I tried it with the v1.8.0 firmware but the video artifact started acting up just like on the other ones. going back to v1.6.0 cleared it up...

I meant the antennas on the transmitter (TX), not the aircraft. ;)

That also - do not forget to set your RTH height appropriately; but I was actually referring to checking for the signal between AC and TX; both video and control, to ensure both are working OK some distance from each other.

I'm sure these are in any typical checklist but I always inspect the props and motor-mount points. I've gotten complacent and have not been doing ground range checks and that almost bit me in the butt yesterday so I'm definitely going to start doing that again.
