Okay, had another go at it, upgraded firmware on controller and was able to successfully link to the P4 in Go4 and went for a brief flight. All is good. I guess the lesson is that if you cannot get a GL300A to link to a P4, try updating the controller firmware.

I have three iPad Air 2 that I use for flying. One has sim card capability, the other two do not. They work very well and have really dropped in price to buy used or refurbed. You can get a 32 GB Air 2 for around $200 on eBay.
