I kept trying and after about 24 hours I achieved a connection and logged in successfully. It's not the first time for me and I have heard elsewhere that the servers go down occasionally. Such is life !

Thank you Good Day. That makes sense and is what I thought might be the problem. However I can log in using the same username and pw on DJI Assistant but I guess that may be a different server.
