Spent a lovely afternoon out at the Zoo Lake Park in Johannesburg, got an amazing lunch at Moyo's with the wife and then took the drone for a quick flight around the park and over the Lake.

Zoo Lake's history dates back to the city's early years when, in 1891, a timber plantation was started by banker and mining magnate Herman Eckstein and more than three million trees were planted in the area.

In 1904 the land was dedicated to the memory of Herman Eckstein, who had been head of Rand Mines which was the holding company of the original Braamfontein Company and donated in terms of the Deed of Gift ‘in trust for the inhabitants of Johannesburg to be used for the purpose of a public park’ and it is this ‘gift’ that has enabled the Park to remain a haven, despite years of apartheid restrictions, to all people for all walks, colour and creed.

The park was designed around an artificial lake, to which a central fountain was added in 1937. The fountain, a Johannesburg heritage symbol, was built to commemorate the coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, and was subsequently named the Coronation Fountain.
