With all the model numbers out there, and several detailed tutorials on how to do the install across several of those model numbers, what's the best controller?

Also, seems a lot of people are getting as good if not better range out of the stock transmitter, if I'm understanding correctly. So the Futaba doesn't offer much in terms of range advantage?

Range wise, the stock controller is excellent. No need to upgrade if that's your only need. It is unclear if stock uses all of the FASST features to get the utmost interference handling capability. There is no good data on that but stock is again very good. Functionally the Futabas are champs. When you first look at them, you think it's kind of ridiculous that there are so many switches. And now all but two of mine do something. As for models:

  • T8J is the entry level, S-FHSS. .
  • T8FG is similar functionally except it uses FASST, the gold standard for interference handling. Good in urban use.
  • 14SG is the bees knees, also uses FASST but has a return channel for RSSI, telemetry, etc.

Have you looked at the Taranis? it is classed as an "Open Transmitter" and has S-Bus, and cheaper than Futaba and has built in telemetry, talks to you or plays music.
