When Do You Know The RC Batteries Are Bad?

On the rechargeable/internal batteries in the RC for the actual unit and the WiFi extender how do you know the batteries have served their useful life? Do they go out slow or quick? Do they just not accept a charge? Do you have to send the unit in the DJI or does one change them out yourself? Thanks...
