Possible. Drones as we know them today are actually very, very old. Just the tech wasn't economically feasible, especially not for hobbyists.

The modern military drone as known today was the brainchild of John Stuart Foster Jr., a nuclear physicist and former head of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (then called the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory).[5] In 1971, Foster was a model airplane hobbyist and had the idea this hobby could be applied to building weapons.[5] He drew up plans and by 1973 Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) built two prototypes called "Praeire" and "Calere", they were powered by a modified lawn-mower engine and could stay aloft for two hours while carrying 28-pounds of load.[5]

Fooling the hick cattle farmers around Roswell, NM could've been very easy with the top secret military technology of the time --- but faking those dead green aliens was the tricky part !!

Hate to get all metaphysical on your *** but --- what if Earth and all the life forms on it are just some computer program written by an advanced civilization of little green aliens somewhere (ie, the "Matrix") ??

And just like in the Matrix movies --- the Roswell Crash of 1947 was just a "glitch" in the software code that allowed us to see the real truth for a very brief moment? The Patterson-Gimlin film of Bigfoot in 1967 could also be considered a "bug" that we werent supposed to see ??
