With the ipad ground station using way points it would be pretty awesome if it could use sonar http://www.maxbotix.com/articles/067.htm to avoid obstacles. Has anyone thought about doing this, I guess its not that easy since well you would need to have the firmware to support this. Just wondering what people think on this forum for the Phantom 2

I suppose you could use the sonar system from a Parrot Drone and connect it some how..

More likely to be LiDAR for longer ranging. There's a thread here: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=6434

And there's this: http://www.dragoninnovation.com/project ... minimodule

Thanks, I sent these guys and email to see if anyone has done anything similar using their products.. http://www.maxbotix.com/

Of course I see the biggest stumbling block being the programming needed in the Phantom firmware to be able to take advantage of this?

The NAZA M is a black box, locked bootloader. I use Maxbotix sensors for some other projects. They don't have much range unless you go with their more advanced units which are expensive. I also find them very hard to filter out erroneous signals. If you notice in the LiDAR example I posted before, they use a signature in their outgoing pulse to filter out anything that isn't a true echo.
