What exactly does the playback button actually do? Does it playback what you just recorded? I feel stupid asking this question but I haven't bought my phantom yet.

Yes, it's huge benefit to confirm you got the shot you're looking for. While you're still in the sky, if you see it doesn't look good enough, redo the shot, immediately. It plays back the video in 720P and any photos you took. You no longer have to land, remove the flash, plug into the computer, just to insure you got the shot. Keep in mind the flash will have the full 1080P or 4K video, which is crystal clear, unlike the 720P feed from the Lightbridge, which is clear, but not as pristine as the recorded video on the flash device.
