I got a Phantom 2 version 2 for Christmas and with the cold weather I haven't flown it yet. It's finally getting nice I'm ready to try it out, but very nervous about all the firmware and smart battery stuff I've read.

So what should I do just charge it up and take it out or should I do updates first? Have the battery issues been solved?

Some will say you dont need to update, others like me think its a good idea, you decide, in the meantime i wrote a sticky here

its for the vision but covers the basics

As for the battery, i think DJi pulled the updates after an issue, so only certain batteries will update and others dont.

I suggest quit worrying about internet paranoia and go fly your bird.

There are countless posts with 'issues'. I have a P2 v2, and have not had any issues what so ever.
Most of the issues seem to be with the Vision series.
I have the 3.08 firmware, latest battery, H33D firmware, haven't had an issue.
Never had a fly away.
I'm strict with;
Battery full charge.
Compass cal if in new area (40km)
Do my distance run first, then returning at 50% batt.
Back at take off area by 30%batt (ie within about 50m)
Always start and watch for two sets of fast green flash lights. If in doubt, power off and start again.
Check GPS via FPV before motor start.
If I loose FPV or sight, I use home lock and pull back.

Max distance I have done is 925m with FPV, which is plenty for me. If going for a long distance, I go out in ATTI mode, faster and less batt for same distance (may be just perceived, but it seems better to me).

Still nervous as hell every flight, and have done 60+hrs.

Be thorough with preflight and just have a crack!

My new v3 is charging right now and will be in the air asap!
The only thing we have to fear, is fear itself! [emoji41]
