Modified USB cable to charge tablet

Has anybody tried a modified USB cable to charge a tablet (iPad mini) at the same time that it is connected to a controller?

It should be simple enough - I am thinking about stripping a USB cable (4 wires) so that the (- data) & (+ data) cables run from the transmitter to the tablet and the (ground) & (5v) run from a power source to the tablet.

Iv got several spare batteries and my tablet battery is now the weak link.

Someone tried a splitter cable recently. Here's the thread.
Would this be a possible way to charge iphone while flying?

That's my plan, but I'll have to modify the cable if I want t connect to the transmitter at the same time.

Thanks, looks like the cable he bought didn't work, but that could be because the 2 power cables were connected - I might give it a try and separate power and data completely, just in case.
