A DDOS will make a site unreachable or slow to respond.

All that is needed is some fine tuning of the MySQL server.
ie: set max_user_connections higher

MySQL tuning is an art on its own.
Many things can be set to optimize a MySQL server in the my.cnf configuration file, and can take days to get it correct.
Problem is that after every change the MySQL needs to be restarted and been running for 24 hrs to see if it needs more tuning.
