Your right. The compass is much different from my other P1 & FC40. With those I would get the flashing lights telling me I had compass issues (rebar in concrete etc), however takeoff flight & landing were fine.Landing near metal would be the least bad. Calibrating near metal is pretty much a guaranteed crash. Taking off near metal is not a guaranteed crash but you increase your odds dramatically. Not worth the risk.
With my P3, much different scenario. At first I figured it would behave the same as the other 2. Wrong! Immediately after takeoff it hovered erratically in all vertical & horizontal directions. Landed immediately, & never again tried when it showed compass error.
